Know Your Neuro! The Importance of the Neurologic Exam for Pediatric Physical Therapists in all Settings
Saturday, October 28, 2023
3:00 PM – 4:30 PM CST
Location: Room 215-216, 2nd Floor, CHI Convention Center
A comprehensive neurologic examination is learned as part of entry level physical therapist practice, but therapists in many settings do not routinely practice this skill. The potential for autonomous practice increases the importance of differential diagnosis to rule out complex neurologic diagnoses. Using case examples from pediatric outpatient orthopedic, inpatient rehabilitation and early intervention settings, this presentation will emphasize the importance of a thorough, efficient and accurate routine neurologic examination of pediatric patients in all settings. Essential features of a comprehensive neurologic examination will be reviewed along with "red flags" that warrant immediate referral.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to verbalize the importance of a comprehensive, efficient and accurate neurologic examination during initial assessment for all pediatric populations.
Upon completion of this course, the learner will name key elements and red flags associated with a comprehensive neurologic examination.
Upon completion of this course, the learner will select and interpret appropriate outcome measures to contribute to differential diagnosis in a pediatric neurologic examination.
