Child Abuse and Neglect: Preventing, Recognizing and Addressing Abuse, Trauma and Neglect

Abuse and neglect are serious problems encountered in both children and the elderly population and are important public health issues. Healthcare professionals, including physical therapists and physical therapy assistants, are in a unique position to assist with the identification, prevention, and education on child abuse and neglect. In many situations, signs of child abuse and neglect are missed. Physical therapists and physical therapy assistants must be vigilant regarding abuse and neglect in any child who presents with signs and symptoms suspecting abuse or neglect. Failing to report child abuse can result in serious repercussions for clinicians. Because early identification may be lifesaving, it is imperative that physical therapists and physical therapy assistants are knowledgeable about signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect This session provides an overview of topics related to child abuse and neglect. The different types of abuse and neglect, risk factors, and consequences of child abuse and neglect will be described. Participants will be able to identify indicators of child abuse and neglect as well as students experiencing trauma. Ethical and professional responsibilities and general guidelines for mandatory reporting will be outlined. This session will discuss strategies to prevent child abuse and neglect related to the child, family, school, community and society. To ensure effective and comprehensive care, increased understanding of trauma, abuse and neglect, and how to identify and address these issues are necessary to promote positive health outcomes for staff, children, and their families. Personal experiences of a child with disability abuse will be presented.
