Putting Learning Back into Motor Learning for Evidence-Based Intervention

The early years of development are vital for creating brain architecture that connects specialized brain centers. Cognitive and motor areas of the brain are uniquely set-up to act together for exploration and learning, and physical therapists can provide motor-based problem-solving activities during critical periods to advance overall development. This session will present evidence-based learning strategies to build cognitive and motor skills for young children, along with strategies for optimizing learning for caregivers. Strategies from several recent and ongoing clinical trials will be shared, with case studies for audience members to engage in problem solving and use of new knowledge.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how embodied cognition impacts what we do to promote both motor learning and motor skills.
  • Discuss differences between current practice and what evidence suggests should be the ‘key ingredients’ in early intervention to support and scaffold learning.
  • State four strategies that help to engage parents during and between intervention sessions.
