Location: St. Nicholas B, 2nd Floor, Hilton Omaha
Looking for a new technique to help patients attain their functional goals? Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) is a performance-based treatment approach for children and adults who experience difficulties performing the skills they want to, need to, or are expected to perform. CO-OP uses collaborative goal setting, dynamic performance analysis, and cognitive strategy use to meet the patient’s goals and enable success. The goal of CO-OP is to assist patients with performance difficulties to succeed in performing the everyday tasks and activities that are important to them and their caregivers. CO-OP utilizes the global strategy of Goal-Plan-Do-Check to guide patients to actively problem solve and develop strategies for meeting their functional goals. The CO-OP Approach has been demonstrated to efficiently facilitate acquisition of a large variety of skills ranging from motor activities like bicycle riding, to executive functions needed to successfully return to school or work post-concussion. In addition, CO-OP also consistently demonstrates generalization of learned skills to other environments and transfer of acquired strategies to solve other performance problems. CO-OP was first developed to treat children with Developmental Coordination Disorder though has now is a proven, evidence-based intervention for children and adults with a variety of conditions including CP, ADHD, ASD, ABI, TBI, DD, stroke, dystonia, and more. CO-OP can be used in person, via telehealth, and small groups in a variety of practice settings including school based, outpatient, rehab, and more!
Learning Objectives:
Define the 7 key features of CO-OP
Perform a dynamic performance analysis and use guided discovery and strategies to teach a new motor skill
Implement the global strategy of Goal-Plan-Do Check to integrate CO-OP into current your practice
